Food for your Face

Food is not just for consumption, packed with vitamins and minerals your skin can also benefit from all that nature has to offer. I decided to do a little experimenting in the kitchen and see what I could make that would help to give me an extra glow while hopefully also giving my wallet a bit of a break too.

I researched a lot of recipes for DIY masks. So.Many.Options. I opted to mix a few ideas together. The yogurt acts as a moisturizer, while the oatmeal is an exfoliator and all the ingredients are suppose to help with redness and acne. Speaking of blemishes, you know what no one ever says about being in your 20’s, that you will still get pimples. Maybe because if I heard that at 16 I might have cried for days and declared what’s the point. I really thought in my teens once I became an adult my skin would automatically become flawless. Ha! Oh to be a teen and think that all of life is magical as an adult.

What is magical is when you make yourself a face mask and then spend the next 10 minutes trying to take a photo with said mask on your face that is decent enough for the internet. Just give up. You will look a fool and end the end find you are comfortable with that.

Strawberry, Yogurt, Honey, & Oatmeal Mask

2 small strawberries (or one large)

1 tablespoon plain greek yogurt (no sugar)

1 tablespoon quick oats

1 teaspoon honey (if you warm it up, it blends better)

Directions:

Dice strawberries small, then smash with fork. Mix all ingredients together. Rub all over your face. Take goofy pictures (technically optional). Wash with warm water. Do your regular face thing.

After giving my face so much love I really just had to do the same for my lips. Here is a simple way to exfoliate your lips. Just mix a little sugar and honey together and rub on your lips. I really did think my lips felt smoother after the first try. You don’t need a lot of either ingredient. The amount in this picture is enough for an entire slumber party.

Speaking of all this beauty DIY I think it is time I start transitioning my products to be more environmentally friendly. While I love the Earth and want to treat it right, to be honest my bigger motivation is the harmful toxins I might be putting all over myself. I’m not ready to run to my bathroom and throw everything out (I can’t afford to be doing that), but it is time to start buying better for me stuff as my products run out. I just read a great article from Mind Body Green that has tips to get you started on having “cleaner” beauty regime. Additionally, Environmental Working Group has an awesome database, Skin Deep, which allows you to check if your products have harmful chemicals. Be careful, it’s addictive to test all of your products, but also scary and sad to realize all the toxins in stuff.

How aware are you of the beauty products you buy? Any ones you love? Any fun DIY recipes to glam me up I should know about?

My favorite line: “What is magical is when you make yourself a face mask and then spend the next 10 minutes trying to take a photo with said mask on your face that is decent enough for the internet. Just give up. You will look a fool and in the end find you are comfortable with that.” Ha ha. You made me chuckle with that one. But humor aside, I really love the idea of natural beauty products…especially ones that are edible! 🙂 Thanks for sharing this great recipe!
