Foodie Friday: Broiled Grapefruit

I am an unabashed lover of breakfast, as you probably know already. While I love making breakfast foods at home, my favorite weekend activity is going out to brunch. My very favorite location in a city bursting with many, many delicious brunch spots is the Daily Cafe in Portland (the Pearl location).

The menu changes regularly and is beautifully seasonal and fresh. On Sundays, the Daily Cafe offers a prixe fixe three-course brunch. I am not lying.

When I brunched there recently, I saw an intriguing dish on the appetizer menu: a broiled grapefruit. It was glazed in a molasses-type syrup, which complemented that tart pop of the citrus very well. It was so incredibly good, that I had to try to make my own version. It’s probably a lot more simple than the one you can enjoy at the Daily Cafe, but it’s a fun alternative to the typical grapefruit routine.

Simple Broiled Grapefruit

  • One half of a grapefruit
  • 1/2 tsp butter
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp honey or molasses
Place the grapefruit half, face-up in a ramekin or oven-safe bowl. Cut the butter into small slivers and spread across the face of the fruit. Sprinkle on sugar and drizzle with the honey/molasses. Cook under a broiler on high until the sugar caramelizes. Let cool a bit and enjoy.
