Let’s Get Saucy: Honey Mustard

One of the best aspects of having a food-themed season here at Sweet Athena is the opportunity to talk “favorites.” While I’m a fan of experimenting with new things, there’s something special about trying out someone’s very favorite anything. This kind of exchange involves a bit of a risk; it’s like saying, “this is part of me…do you like it?”

I love these kinds of opportunities. This risk-taking. This chance to get to know a little gem about someone else that goes beyond a simple question. (Really, how much do you really learn from knowing someone’s favorite color?)

With this in mind, I challenge you to share a lil’ favorite something of yours. Whether it’s a food, a recipe, an ingredient, share away! I’d love to try it.

I’ll go first.

Honey Mustard Sauce

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon curry powder

Simply mix and slather it on to whatever your heart desires. I found this zesty version through Southern Living’s fantastic recipe Honey-Pecan Chicken Thighs. If you are into chicken, this recipe is a must-try. However, the sauce would be awesome on many things: veggies, tofu, beans, etc.

P.S. Sauces are a great way to make “the usual” meals more interesting, and I’m always looking for ways to mix things up. With this in mind, I’m going to be featuring a few more saucy concoctions over the next couple of months!

One of my favorite ingredients is ricotta cheese. I am a big fan of using it as a base on pizza. And then I make lemon-ricotta pancakes with the leftovers!

    lemon-ricotta pancakes

    1c flour
    1tsp baking powder
    1/4tsp baking soda
    1/4tsp salt
    3tbsp sugar
    3/4c ricotta
    3/4c milk
    1/4c lemon juice
    1 egg
    2 tbsp melted, cooled butter
    1tsp vanilla
    1.5tsp lemon zest

Stir flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar in small bowl.
Combine ricotta, milk, lemon juice, egg, butter, vanilla and zest in large bowl.
Mix in dry ingredients. Make pancakes!
